Toll increase on Clifton Suspension Bridge
Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust is consulting with local communities and users of the Bridge on proposals to increase the toll from £1 to £1.50 for vehicles.
The toll was last increased over ten years ago, in 2014. Since then, increases in inflation and cost of maintenance, alongside updated health and safety requirements, wage increases, climate change (how the bridge deals with stronger winds) and increased weight of traffic, now mean the Trust needs to increase the toll in order to continue to maintain and protect the bridge for future generations.
Going forward, the proposal is also to introduce a small annual increase in the toll, linked to inflation, rather than making a larger increase less frequently. There will continue to be no charge for cyclists and pedestrians. Regular users of the Bridge can also continue to use a Bridge Card to cross the bridge, which can result in a reduced price per crossing.
More information on the proposals and the opportunity to give feedback can be found at: https://cliftonbridge.org.uk/toll-consultation/
A webinar is also being held on Wednesday 8 October from 6 -7 pm where you can hear from Bridge Master Trish Johnson and submit questions - you can sign up to join here.
Paper copies of the information and the survey can be found in the Clifton Suspension Bridge Museum and in Pill, Clifton and Bristol Central libraries, or can be requested from ABC.
The consultation will close on Friday 7 November and the responses will be carefully considered and our proposals revised if necessary.
The Trust hopes to submit a formal application to increase the toll to the Department for Transport (DfT) by the end of the year. It is likely to take some time for the DFT to consider the proposals; the toll will remain at £1 until this has happened.
